The first-jobpoll.

A question about the first person who helped you find work made an abstract network idea feel familiar.

The first-job poll used at the community pop-up

THE PROMPT / A FAMILIAR STARTING POINT

“Who introduced you

to your first job?”

I started with a moment someone could remember, rather than a term they needed to learn. The vote opened a way into a conversation about referrals, support and the people we can reach.

Explaining the activity at the table

01

Think back.

Begin with the first job or piece of work you can remember.

02

Remember the connection.

Was there a person who introduced you, or helped you find the opening?

03

Leave a vote.

Add a mark to the board, with space to talk about the answer.

A referral made

the idea personal.

The research asks how information and opportunity move through relationships. The poll translated that question into a familiar experience. It was an invitation to join in, rather than a measure of the wider workforce.
